You Don’t Want to Hear These 3 HVAC Sounds

A “healthy” HVAC system should operate fairly quietly and smoothly when it’s being used to heat and cool your home. But certain sounds coming from your unit when it’s operating should be considered a sign that your heating and cooling system needs some professional attention. To give you a better idea of when it’s time to call a pro in Jasper, Texas, here are three HVAC system sounds you definitely don’t want to hear.

1. Squealing or Screeching

Squealing noises could be a sign of issues with your unit’s blower motor. Common sources of squealing noises include motor-bearing problems and a worn belt. Ideally, you want to replace a worn belt before it breaks since it’s what makes your blower turn. Some HVAC motors also become noisy or produce screeching sounds because they need to be lubricated.

2. Recurring Clicking Sounds

It’s perfectly normal for an HVAC system to make clicking sounds as it turns off and on. What’s not normal is hearing repeated clicking sounds that may be coming from either your control panel or the compressor that’s outside. The problem could be a defective relay or an electrical issue.

3. Rattling, Banging, Humming or Clanking

A rattling sound coming from your compressor unit likely means you have either a failing motor or hardware that’s loose. A bad motor or start capacitor can also produce a humming sound. Clanking or banging noises could be a sign that something’s going on with your system’s blower assembly or motor. If you hear a really loud banging or clanging sound, turn off your unit since this typically means that a component or part is loose or broken off from where it was attached.
